Medical Marijuana is The New Midol? California Docs Pitch Cannabis to Fairer Sex

Category: Culture | Posted on Wed, July, 27th 2011 by THCFinder
‚ÄčIn Los Angeles, the cannabis club capital of the nation, we know that medical marijuana is good for, well, whatever you write down on the clipboard in the pot doc's office.
Bad backs, migraines, sore muscles, break-ups, raves, Snoop Dogg concerts.

But, ever the clever marketing minds, some cannabis quacks in the Bay Area have come up with a new, novel angle for prescribing weed:

Marijuana is the new Midol. (And, frankly, a bowl has got to be a hell of a lot better than a pill).

The clever graduates of overseas medical schools (we kid) at Greenway Medical Marijuana Physician Evaluations say they've got the cure for the monthly blues:

For many women, monthly menstrual cycles include cramping, and they can also include nausea and backaches. Cannabis is prescribed for cancer patients specifically because it helps target pain and nausea, so it follows that it would also be a good herbal remedy for cramps. Medicinal marijuana also has many secondary, non-psychological effects on the body, including the relaxation of smooth muscles that may be causing the cramps. Indica strains would be beneficial both prior and during the cycle.
Boo-ya. New demographic. But there's more:

They say weed is good for all kinds of (mostly) lady problems, from anorexia (it stimulates the potato chip gene) to menopause (helps patients sleep through hot flashes and can allegedly increase the libido).

Love it. Cannabis is your bud, too, girls.

Anyway, we appreciate the moxie of these physicians. We're just waiting for them to discover the GQ-reading metrosexual market. Weed would be a great cure for the curses of over-employment, ambition and, of course, having-it-together syndrome. (We kid! Comment away).

BCCLA slams medical marijuana reforms

Category: Medical Marijuana | Posted on Wed, July, 27th 2011 by THCFinder
The federal government’s plan to reform Health Canada’s medical marijuana program is not dope, says the B.C. Civil Liberties Association.

Last month, the federal government launched a public consultation on proposed amendments to the program, following a recent Ontario court decision that struck down the program as unconstitutional.

Currently, people seeking marijuana for medical purposes must first get a declaration from a licensed medical practitioner before they can apply to Health Canada for authorization to possess pot. Existing regulations also allow authorized patients or a designated person to get a licence to grow their own medical marijuana.

Under the proposed changes, doctors would directly authorize patients to use medical marijuana and patients would have to purchase it from commercial producers licensed by Health Canada.

But BCCLA’S Micheal Vonn said Health Canada’s proposal is heading in the wrong direction.

“Patients have a constitutional right to access (medical marijuana) without fear of criminal prosecution,” she said.

The BCCLA is also calling for the development of a “non-profit or price-regulated production and distribution system” based on the “compassion clubs” model.

Dana Larsen, director of the Vancouver Dispensary Society, said he would like to see dispensaries brought into the program because they have the ability to work with producers and growers, offer organic-quality product and provide one-on-one consultation and education.

Seattle mayor signing medical marijuana law

Category: Medical Marijuana | Posted on Wed, July, 27th 2011 by THCFinder
SEATTLE —
Seattle Mayor Mike McGinn scheduled a signing ceremony Wednesday with the city attorney and other officials to sign a bill regulating medical marijuana like any other business.

The bill passed July 18 by the city council requires that medical marijuana operations be licensed, obtain food-handling permits if they sell marijuana cookies, and follow all other regulations such as land use codes.

The approach contrasts with several other cities in Washington that have imposed moratoriums on such operations.

Medical marijuana regulations in the state have been uncertain since Gov. Chris Gregoire vetoed much of a bill that would have created a system of licensed medical marijuana dispensaries. She left in sections allowing collective medical marijuana operations.

New test can detect Marijuana in your fingerprints

Category: News | Posted on Wed, July, 27th 2011 by THCFinder
A new technology that analyzes the sweat from a person's fingertips looks to revolutionize the drug testing market, providing on-site results in minutes with a test so advanced it can even detect marijuana intoxication.

Using gold nanoparticles and special antibodies, the tech produced by British firm Intelligent Fingerprinting latches on to metabolites on the fingerprint and turns a specific color depending on which drug byproducts are detected.

While it can be configured to search for drugs like nicotine, methadone and cocaine, it also presents another innovation: helping to determine if someone is actively intoxicated on marijuana.

Marijuana's psychoactive ingredient is fat soluble, so it stays in the body for weeks locked in fat cells. This means that traditional drug testing using urine analysis can detect whether a person has used marijuana up to a month afterwards, but it doesn't actually reveal if the person was intoxicated at the time the test was taken.

The fingerprint test, on the other hand, can detect minuscule amounts of broken-down drug compounds in metabolites in just minutes, pointing to whether that person was stoned or not. The development leads to a breakthrough that could result in more accurate testing to determine whether a person is driving while drugged.

The device was first announced last week, during the UCL International Crime Science Conference.
