The Sacramento City Council has advanced an ambitious commercial marijuana cultivation program by finalizing local licensing fees for an anticipated 200 cannabis grow rooms expected to flourish in mostly light industrial zones in the capital city.

As a result of council action Tuesday night, city staff is to begin accepting permit applications for the businesses in early April, triggering a process – expected to last several months – for licenses to be approved.

The approval of permit fees was the first step in a city effort to raise $6.3 million in revenues from marijuana businesses to pay for hiring additional city staff and police over the next three years to regulate the cannabis industry in Sacramento and drive out illegal cultivators operating in neighborhoods or other zones where the businesses are prohibited. The effort is expected to require 54 positions, including 32 new city hires at a cost of $5.4 million.

“What will we ever give up for marijuana?” NFLPA president Eric Winston asked recently on NBC’s PFT Live. “We get tested once per year, 99 percent of them know it’s coming.”

Winston indicated the instead of concessions, the NFLPA will use science to prove that pot is a better alternative for pain management than opiates.

ANCHORAGE, Alaska (AP) — In an abrupt about-face, Alaska marijuana regulators on Tuesday decided to once again attempt to write rules that would allow the onsite consumption of pot in retail stores.

During a high-profile meeting just last month, the board cited fears over how the Trump administration might crack down on marijuana, even in the eight states where recreational use is legal, in letting proposed regulations wither that would have made Alaska the first state in the nation to allow onsite use.

Those fears weren’t mentioned Tuesday as the board voted 4-1 to attempt to come up with a new set of rules that would eventually be sent out for public comment.
