This Canadian University Offers a Class on the Business of Marijuana

Category: News | Posted on Mon, August, 17th 2015 by THCFinder

Students at Kwantlen Polytechnic University can now sign up for a class with high stakes: the school in British Columbia is offering a course called “Introduction to Professional Management of Marijuana for Medical Purposes in Canada.”

The class will take place online over 14 weeks, the CBC reports. Since the legality of marijuana is being fought out in the courts in Canada (currently it is only approved for medicinal use, and regulations vary by region), the course will focus on educating students about following the rules to grow a legitimate business. Only 25 growing facilities are currently federally licensed in the country.

Similar courses have already popped up throughout the U.S.: the University of Denver Sturm College of Law offered a class on “Representing the Marijuana Client”; Vanderbilt University School of Law taught “Marijuana Law and Policy”; and Harvard University Law School taught “Tax Planning for Marijuana Dealers.”

Seattle Pot Stores Owners Hang On As Weed Prices Fall

Category: Medical Marijuana | Posted on Sun, August, 16th 2015 by THCFinder

It's been a year since the first retail pot shops opened in Washington, and the cost of weed has dropped significantly. But that’s not stopping eager pot entrepreneurs hoping to get in on the budding industry.

When Ian Eisenberg opened Uncle Ike's in Seattle last September, marijuana was selling at about $25 per gram. He said he had no idea what he was doing.

"We really had no expectations because we didn’t know what to expect, we had no experience in the pot business,” Eisenberg says. "We had no experience in retail. I remember the first day we opened, we didn’t even have change in our cash registers for customers."

According to the Washington State Liquor and Cannabis Board, prices were high at first because the supply couldn’t keep up with the initial demand. Over the year, however, production has amped up, which has brought the price down to an average of $11 per gram. Eisenberg said that means he's losing money.

"We’re the classic business school 101 joke, that we lose a little bit with every transaction and we’re trying to make it up in volume," he said.

How Much Does A Marijuana Blunt Roller Job Pay In The Music Industry?

I have lived my entire life in Oregon, and have always loved music. That has made life tougher for me compared to other people that live in larger states that have more of a ‘music scene.’ There are not a ton of high profile music events in Oregon, which is not to say that we don’t have great music here, because we do, but we don’t have music events on the same level as a state like California. As an Oregonian I would travel to California from time to time for some huge music festivals, each of which had dozens of musical acts that I liked.

I was at a music festival in California in 2011 and I got a chance to meet the members of Cypress Hill. It is a moment that I often measure my life around, as in the pre-Cypress Hill meet up part of my life and the post-Cypress Hill meet up part of my life. The group was doing a meet and greet at the event, and I made sure to be one of the first ones in line. While I was waiting for my turn to meet the group, I couldn’t help but watch a guy whose sole purpose at the event seemed to be to roll blunts for the group members and entourage. This guy could roll blunts faster than anyone I had ever seen before, and they were all uniform in shape and size. I don’t think I’ve ever seen anyone as good at rolling blunts as he was.

I was left wondering if that was an actual job for the guy, or if he was just the best at it out of the crew so he did it out of necessity? He didn’t seem to actually be a part of the group’s crew, he seemed like an employee. I was never able to confirm it, but I do know now that there are actually quite a few blunt rollers in the music industry. So many that apparently Billboard was able to find enough of them to determine the average salary of a blunt roller while on tour. According to Billboard, it’s $500/week, and also includes free hotel and travel expenses.
