Even More Science Suggesting That Cannabinoids May Halt Diabetes

Category: Medical Marijuana | Posted on Wed, June, 12th 2013 by THCFinder
By Paul Armentano, NORML Deputy Director

Preclinical study data published online in the scientific journal Nutrition & Diabetes reports that tetrahydrocannabivarin (THCV) — a naturally occurring analogue of THC — possesses positive metabolic effects in animal models of obesity.

British researchers assessed the effects of THCV administration on dietary-induced and genetically modified obese mice. Authors reported that although THCV administration did not significantly affect food intake or body weight gain in any of the models, it did produce several metabolically beneficial effects, including reduced glucose intolerance, improved glucose tolerance, improved liver triglyceride levels, and increased insulin sensitivity.

Researchers concluded: “Based on these data, it can be suggested that THCV may be useful for the treatment of the metabolic syndrome and/or type 2 diabetes (adult onset diabetes), either alone or in combination with existing treatments. Given the reported benefits of another non-THC cannabinoid, CBD in type 1 diabetes, a CBD/THCV combination may be beneficial for different types of diabetes mellitus.”

Medical marijuana all but halts Colorado 6-year-olds chronic seizures

Category: Medical Marijuana | Posted on Wed, June, 12th 2013 by THCFinder
COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. — For most of her life, 6-year-old Charlotte Figi has suffered from 20 to 60 seizures a day due to an incurable genetic disorder called Dravet Syndrome. After the use of medical marijuana, Charlotte has shown dramatic improvement.

A lengthy feature in an edition of this week’s Colorado Springs Gazette chronicles the youngster’s difficult journey.

Charlotte’s parents, Paige and Matt Figi, said the daily seizures made it impossible for Charlotte to have any kind of normal existence. The family had tried a number of remedies, like a special diet and dozens of prescribed medications, to combat the seizures. But each treatment exhibited negative side effects.

While the diet appeared to ameliorate the seizures at first, the strict food restrictions prompted bone loss, plunging Charlotte into a preliminary stage of osteoporosis. She also suffered from respiratory, ear and bladder infections. The drugs put stress on her organs and some of the medications caused her to stop breathing.

Paige and Matt said they had reached a stage of desperation. When the suggestion came to try a less conventional approach to their daughter’s disease, both were willing to overlook the controversial implications of a 6-year-old using medicinal marijuana.

Marijuana dispensaries reopen in San Diego while ignorant neighbors complain

Category: Dispensaries | Posted on Tue, June, 11th 2013 by THCFinder
sandiegoshopsSAN DIEGO – Several marijuana dispensaries have popped up in San Diego and the city isn’t doing anything about it.

Around 25 dispensaries have opened in the past few months, including 10 in Pacific Beach.

Mayor Bob Filner and City Council have been working on an ordinance to zone these types of shops, but nothing has been made official yet.

Scott Chipman of San Diegans for Safe Neighborhoods has filed complaints with the city, but the neighborhood code compliance department has stayed silent.

“It’s a very disturbing thing to see the city allow more and more of these stores to open without any enforcement,” said Chipman.

“Selling marijuana is not a legal grey area. Selling marijuana is illegal by state and federal law and that’s what these stores are doing,” Chipman said. “They are basically drug dealers operating in our business districts.”

City Attorney Jan Goldsmith told Fox5 his hands are tied.

Goldsmith’s office shutdown more than 100 dispensaries in the past two years, but hasn’t prosecuted a dispensary case since January after Filner stopped enforcing the zoning laws.

“It’s sort of like having a speed limit, but no police officers to enforce it,” Goldsmith said.

“This mayor has decided not to refer them. The City Council has directed him three times to refer cases to us and he has refused. In many cases it is between city council and the mayor,” Goldsmith added. “We’ll do our job.”
