Marijuana Dispensary Owner Says Porn Shop Brings Down Studio City Neighborhood (Really)

Marijuana dispensaries have been painted, justifiably or not, as crime magnets.

The Los Angeles Police Department and the L.A. City Attorney's office have made no secret of their disdain for pot shops that have been the targets of violent armed robberies and drug rings. The LAPD recently boasted it shut down all the cannabis retailers in the Chatsworth area.

But one dispensary owner says not only that his shop is not the problem, but that another kind of business is. The dirty business:

Sam Humeid, owner of Perennial Holistic Wellness Center, Inc. (a pot shop with valet parking on Ventura Boulevard), sent a letter to the editor of Studio City Patch complaining that an adult video store wants to open in the same strip mall.

He alleges that the same store, Red Hot Video, has experienced crime in its current location nearby (apparently at Colfax Avenue and Ventura).

Humeid says that a homeless man with a history of mental illness was caught throwing a rock through the porn shop's window on Friday. In fact, he said, the suspect was caught by the dispensary's own valet.

He also somehow attributes a nearby sex assault last year to the adult retail biz. Humeid says adult stores attract deviants:

I found that crime, especially sexually related crimes increase dramatically around such stores ... An adult book store is not the right thing for this community. Maybe a community poll on your site about another porn shop could be interesting news

Agreed: L.A. needs to embrace wholesome businesses that attract clean-living (green-living?) citizens.

Unfortunately for Humeid, he might have spoken too soon. The L.A. City Council is aiming to put all the city's pot shops out of business. Smut stores? Not so much.

Obama "Worst President on Medical Marijuana"

From Rolling Stone, a report on the Administration’s escalation of the federal government’s campaign against medical marijuana. It begins:

Back when he was running for president in 2008, Barack Obama insisted that medical marijuana was an issue best left to state and local governments. “I’m not going to be using Justice Department resources to try to circumvent state laws on this issue,” he vowed, promising an end to the Bush administration’s high-profile raids on providers of medical pot, which is legal in 16 states and the District of Columbia.

But over the past year, the Obama administration has quietly unleashed a multiagency crackdown on medical cannabis that goes far beyond anything undertaken by George W. Bush. The feds are busting growers who operate in full compliance with state laws, vowing to seize the property of anyone who dares to even rent to legal pot dispensaries, and threatening to imprison state employees responsible for regulating medical marijuana. With more than 100 raids on pot dispensaries during his first three years, Obama is now on pace to exceed Bush’s record for medical-marijuana busts. “There’s no question that Obama’s the worst president on medical marijuana,” says Rob Kampia, executive director of the Marijuana Policy Project. “He’s gone from first to worst.”

Stupid teen looking to steal pot steals a tomato plant

Call it a case of mistaken plant identity.

A 15-year-old boy climbed into Angela Cartwright's kitchen window thinking to make off with a marijuana plant, but instead the young thief was actually stealing a potted tomato plant, a sheriff's arrest report shows.

As he was running from Cartwright's house on Carmen Avenue near Holly Hill on Feb. 10 just after 7 a.m., the teen even yelled at Cartwright, "See, I have one of your pot plants!" the arrest report states.

Cartwright had arrived at her residence that morning after leaving her 6-year-old son off at the school bus stop. When she walked into her home she saw a teenager whose torso was inside her kitchen window and the other half of his body was hanging outside, the report shows.

When Cartwright yelled, "Hey!" the suspect jumped back and bolted, the potted tomato plant in hand.

"I chased him and I yelled out, "You stupid little brat, it's a tomato plant!" Cartwright said Thursday.

The teen gave Cartwright the slip, but Wednesday morning as Cartwright and a friend walked Cartwright's son to the bus stop, they spotted the teenager a second time, the report shows.

The boy was wearing the same clothes Cartwright had seen on him five days earlier, she said.

"I said to my friend, 'That's him,' " Cartwright said. "It looked like he was going to hide from me, but then he stayed there."

According to the report and Cartwright, the boy, who The Daytona Beach News-Journal is not identifying because of his age, admitted to stealing the tomato plant, valued at under $5.

"He seemed like a nice kid," Cartwright said. "It almost seemed as if he wanted to get caught."

While Cartwright, her friend and the teen waited for a deputy to arrive at the bus stop, the 35-year-old mother took the opportunity to give a lecture.

"I gave him the 'mother lecture,' " Cartwright said. "He listened and I told him he should be in school."
