Where Does Obama Stand on the Medical Marijuana Crackdown?

Has Obama changed his mind or does he just not care enough to back up his word and stop the DOJ and DEA from continuing on with these unnecessary raids of medical marijuana dispensaries.
 
As a presidential candidate, Barack Obama indicated that he was fine with medical marijuana. He said that, as president, he wouldn't devote a whole lot of law federal enforcement resources to going after growers, distributors, and users of medical pot in states where it's legal. (As of today, that's 16 states and the District of Columbia. Medical marijuana is illegal under federal law.) For good measure, in 2009 he directed his Justice Department not waste time chasing down "individuals whose actions are in clear and unambiguous compliance with existing state laws providing for the medical use of marijuana." So far so consistent, as Ethan Nadelmann of the Drug Policy Alliance reminds us in a New York Times Op-Ed today.
 
So how to explain the zeal that federal authorities have, over the past year, brought to the task of messing with the legitimate medical marijuana industry? Here's a partial list of the tactics that, according to Nadelmann, the feds have rolled out.
 
• The Treasury Department has forced banks to close accounts of medical marijuana businesses operating legally under state law.
• The IRS has slapped dispensary owners with taxes required of no other businesses.
• The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives recently ruled that medical marijuana patients cannot purchase firearms. 
• Prosecutors have threatened to seize the property of landlords and jail for renting to marijuana dispensaries
• The United States attorney in San Diego has indicated she'll start targeting media outlets that run dispensaries’ ads. 
 
Just to be clear: this is all happening in states where medical marijuana is legal and regulated. In states considering liberalizing their medical pot laws, U.S. attorneys have been in friendly touch to remind local officials that they, the attorneys, have authority prosecute all marijuana offenses.

R.I. sees no teen pot increase

RI is proving that medical marijuana may not be linked directly to higher teen use of marijuana at all.

WASHINGTON, Nov. 6 (UPI) -- Rhode Island did not find increases in adolescent marijuana use related to the state's 2006 legalization of medical marijuana, researchers say.
 
Dr. Esther Choo, an emergency medicine physician with Rhode Island Hospital, and co-authors of a study on the issue said state-level legalization of medical marijuana five years ago raised concerns about increased accessibility and appeal of the drug to youth.
 
The researchers compared trends in adolescent marijuana use in Rhode Island and Massachusetts using the Youth Risk Behavioral Surveillance System between 1997 and 2009.
 
The analysis of data on 32,570 students found while marijuana use was common throughout the study period, there were no statistically significant differences in marijuana use between states in any year.

Students rally for legal marijuana

Fed up with the Governments idiocracy, local students have had enough and want to see some changes being made.

The Obama administration has denied an online petition with more than 70,000 supporters calling for the legalization of marijuana.
 
Jordan Shepherd, a 19-year-old psychology junior, said the White House's response hasn't hurt the movement toward legalization. Rather, it has done the opposite.
 
"I think by actually completely ignoring the movement, he's made it stronger," said Shepherd, president of the UF chapter of NORML, a national organization that aims to repeal marijuana prohibition.
 
The petition, "Legalize and Regulate Marijuana in a Manner Similar to Alcohol," has 74,169 signatures. It is one of eight marijuana-related petitions the White House responded to on its "We the People" website.
 
Online petitions need 25,000 signatures within 30 days to elicit a response from the administration.
 
Gil Kerlikowske, director of the Office of National Drug Control Policy, wrote the response to the marijuana petitions.
 
Shepherd said he was surprised the administration chose Kerlikowske to respond.
 
"It's legally written in his job description that he is forced to oppose legalization," he said.
 
According to the Office of National Drug Control Policy Reauthorization Act of 1998, Kerlikowske's responsibilities as director include taking any actions necessary to oppose the legalization of certain controlled substances, including marijuana.
 
He wrote that, according to the National Institutes of Health, marijuana use is associated with cognitive impairment, addiction and respiratory disease.
 
Kerlikowske also wrote the administration is interested in researching the drug's potential medical uses, but that the Food and Drug Administration and the Institute of Medicine have not found that smoked marijuana meets standards for safe and effective medicine.

Eating Disorders Tied to Absence of Brain Cannabinoids

New research suggests that a brain malfunction that leads to deficits in endocannabinoids may contribute to anorexia nervosa and bulimia.
 
Endocannabinoids are substances made by the brain that affect brain function and chemistry in ways that resemble the effects of cannabis derivatives, including marijuana and hashish.
 
These drugs are often used recreationally and are well known to influence appetite, i.e. causing hunger or the “munchies.”
 
Accordingly, deficits in this brain system would logically be associated with reduced appetite.
