UFCW Praises Passage Of California Cannabis Worker Training Bill

Category: News | Posted on Tue, January, 12th 2016 by THCFinder

united commercial food workers ucfw marijuanaJim Araby, Executive Director of United Food and Commercial Workers (UFCW) Western States Council, has issued the following statement on the Assembly Business and Professions Committee’s 13-0 passage of AB 26 by Assembly Member Reggie Jones-Sawyer. The UFCW is the only union representing cannabis workers in California.

“AB 26 does something our union has advocated for years: creates a state-certified training program for cannabis workers. For patients, these standards will help ensure they get the products they paid for, that these products are safe, and that they will have someone who can answer their questions.

“Last year, the state of California began the process of ending the ‘Wild West’ era of cannabis in our state with a trio of bills to finally regulate this industry, two decades after Proposition 215. Today marks another step in the process, and also shows that Assembly Member Jones-Sawyer continues to be a leader on this issue.

“As state voters look at legalizing recreational cannabis in 2016, this important bill could not come at a better time.

“AB 26 will help ensure the rights of workers are protected, health and safety standards are maintained, and ongoing product knowledge and skills development are sustained with consistency throughout the cannabis industry similar to pharmacy laboratory technicians, nurse and dental assistants, and cosmetologists.”

New York Health Officials Deny Additional Qualified Conditions for Failing Medical Marijuana Program

Category: Medical Marijuana | Posted on Tue, January, 12th 2016 by THCFinder

New York recently launched its ultra-restrictive medical marijuana program for patients suffering from “severe, debilitating, or life-threatening” conditions, but so far there are no signs that state officials are eager to expand the program to service a wider spectrum of patients.

On Monday, Health Commissioner Dr. Howard Zucker announced that he would not allow patients with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, Alzheimer’s disease, muscular dystrophy, dystonia, and rheumatoid arthritis to participate in the medical marijuana program because he does not believe there is enough scientific evidence to prove that cannabis can be an effective treatment for these conditions.

In accordance with state law, the New York Health Department was given a year and a half to consider the five proposed qualified conditions and make a determination as to whether patients with these ailments should be given access to medical marijuana. Officials reportedly pulled in a legion of health and science experts to examine several pieces of research pertaining to marijuana as a viable treatment option, but ultimately they concluded that more evidence was needed before they would be willing to move forward.
