It wasn’t a landslide victory by any measure. But on election day, November 8, 2016, just over 53 percent of voters in Massachusetts said “Yes” to Question 4. And that “Yes” was a vote approve the legalization recreational cannabis for adults 21 and over. But when does marijuana become officially legal in Massachusetts?

Well, folks in Massachusetts won’t have to wait long for legal weed to become a reality. But before finding out when legalization goes into effect, there’s something you should know. Massachusetts is about to have the best possession laws in the entire country. And advocates of legalization say that’s a good thing because it could become a model for other states in the region.

Professor Offers “Stoned Driving App” to Massachusetts Police

Now that Massachusetts voters have legalized recreational marijuana, there’s still no simple way for law enforcement to test if someone is too stoned to drive.

“You have to prosecute the person based on the officer’s observations and what the officer found during the car stop,” William G. Brooks, president of the Massachusetts Chiefs of Police Association, told the Boston Globe. “It makes it very difficult.”

For that reason, University of Massachusetts psychology professor Michael Milburn is offering law enforcement an app that he funded and created to test for marijuana impairment.

Milburn calls his app DRUID, an acronym for “driving under the influence of drugs.” It is a tablet-based app in which users are asked to perform a series of tasks in five minutes.

Where marijuana is the doctor's orders, will insurers pay?

Early this year, a disabled former automobile body worker named Greg Vialpando explained to lawmakers in New Mexico how medical marijuana helped his chronic back pain.

State legislators were considering a bill backed by workers' compensation insurers that would have exempted them from paying for medical marijuana. But Vialpando described how smoking the drug let him escape years of stupor caused by powerful prescription narcotic drugs known as opioids.

The lawmakers ended up dropping the bill, and Vialpando's expenses for buying marijuana are covered by insurance.
