Tommy Chong Announces He Has Prostate Cancer
Tommy Chong, one half of the legendary comedy duo Cheech & Chong, recently announced that he has prostate cancer. He says he first noticed symptoms about 8 years ago while in prison on charges of selling drug paraphernalia, but was only diagnosed last month.
"I've got prostate cancer, and I'm treating it with hemp oil, with cannabis," Tommy told Don Lemon from CNN. "So (legalizing marijuana) means a lot more to me than just being able to smoke a joint without being arrested."
Tommy told CNN that he no longer smoke marijuana, but ingests hemp oil "at night, so I won't be woozy all day."
Tommy Chong has been a longtime advocate for marijuana law reform. He and Cheech Marin spent more than 2 decades on separate career paths after breaking up in the 1980’s. While Cheech tried to shed his “pothead” image, Tommy embraced it, playing the lovable Leo on That 70’s Show. The pair reunited to the joy of millions of cannabis and comedy lovers several years ago with a new comedy tour, one with marijuana legalization as the back drop. They continue to tour together, as well as having other projects in the works.
Tommy describes his prostate cancer "as a slow stage one (that I've) had for a long time." There is no word yet as to how Tommy’s announcement might affect his future career plans. For now it’s enough to hope that Tommy gets well.
It will also be interesting to see how Tommy’s hemp oil treatment progresses. Many of you know the story of Rick Simpson, and the testimonials of dozens of people who say their cancer was cured through the use of hemp oil. If Tommy Chong’s cancer is cured by hemp oil, it would put awareness of an amazing medicinal product to a whole new level.
