Police at Seattle marijuana Hempfest: "Hey dude, want some Doritos?

Category: Events | Posted on Mon, August, 19th 2013 by THCFinder

It wasn’t Seattle’s first “Hempfest” celebrating recreational marijuana. That was 22 years ago.

But the gathering this weekend in the “Emerald City” – featuring crafts, music, food booths, speakers, and plenty of pungent smoke – was the first cannabis protest rally since voters in Washington State approved a ballot measure (I-502) last November legalizing recreational use of the drug.

It also included pro-legalization lawyers explaining the law – including a warning that marijuana is still illegal under federal law – as well as uniformed police officers handing out snacks to smokers feeling the “munchies.”

Technically, public use of marijuana remains illegal under Washington's new law, punishable by a $103 ticket. But Seattle police have only been giving people warnings since the law passed, and they had no plans to write anyone up at Hempfest.

But those bags of nacho-cheese Doritos chips handed out Saturday by Seattle’s finest came with a friendly but very clear message as well.

“We thought you might be hungry,” the label reads. “We also thought now might be a good time for a refresher on the do’s and don’ts of I-502.

The don’ts: "Don't drive while high. Don’t give, sell, or shotgun weed to people under 21. Don't use pot in public. You could be cited but we'd rather give you a warning."

The do’s: “Do listen to Dark Side of the Moon at a reasonable volume. Do enjoy Hempfest.”

The label is signed “(heart), SPD.”

Within 30 minutes 1,000 bags of Doritos were gone.

Seattle Hempfest: One Week Until the World's Largest Marijuana Celebration

Category: Events | Posted on Sat, August, 10th 2013 by THCFinder
SEATTLE, WA —  For three days in August, hundreds of thousands of people will descend on Myrtle Edwards and Centennial Parks on Seattle’s waterfront for the 22nd annual Hempfest, traditionally the largest annual gathering of pro-cannabis supporters in the world.  But following last year’s historic passage of Initiative 502, which legalized the adult possession of marijuana in the state, this year’s Hempfest promises one thing that the previous 21 did not: a victory celebration.

seattle-hempfest-eventWhat started out as a “humble gathering of stoners” in 1991, conceived during a peace vigil in opposition of the first Gulf War and attracting a crowd of about 500 people, has grown to a world-renowned 3 day “protestival” celebrating human rights, equality, freedom, and of course, cannabis.

Spanning 1.3 miles, two public parks, six stages,  and more than 300 vendors and being staffed by over 1,000 volunteers, Hempfest isn’t just the largest annual pro-pot rally in the world — it is also one of the largest special events in the State of Washington.

With a Special Events permit requiring a $1 million insurance policy, emergency evacuation plans, and safety and security personnel, Hempfest is not a “pot party in the park”; it is a bona-fide political rally whose organizers work closely with city officials to ensure a successful — and peaceful — annual tradition.

Past performers have included well known bands such as Potluck, the Kottonmouth Kings, Fishbone, Rehab, and countless others, with notable speakers including Jack Herer, Woody Harrelson, Rick Steves, and many local and national political figures and marijuana reform activists addressing the crowds.

Denver officials eye 4/20 marijuana celebrations with wariness, dread

Category: Events | Posted on Fri, April, 19th 2013 by THCFinder
Ahead of what organizers say will be one of the largest marijuana-themed celebrations in the world, a number of officials in Denver are looking to this weekend's events with something between wariness and dread.

Take, for instance, the city's police department, which plans to have extra officers on hand to monitor the large, marijuana-puffing gathering in Civic Center park known as the "420 Rally." Although public marijuana consumption remains illegal in Colorado, a department spokesman says the beefed-up presence will nonetheless try to maintain a low profile.

"Our biggest goal is to ensure everyone is safe in this environment," Denver police spokesman Sonny Jackson said. "We'll have the necessary number of officers to ensure the safety of the public."

The rally takes place every year on April 20 — a day marijuana enthusiasts regard as a cannabis holiday they call 4/20. It could draw tens of thousands of attendees this year, as the first major public event around marijuana in Colorado since voters legalized use and limited possession of the drug last year.

Hempcon Hits San Jose for 4/20

Category: Events | Posted on Fri, April, 19th 2013 by THCFinder
Billing itself as the world’s largest medical marijuana convention, Hempcon returns April 19-21 to San Jose with “therapeutic” tunes from Wu-Tang rapper Cappadonna, samples and a medicating 420 area.

Straddling the line between a marijuana festival and an educational event, Hempcon showcases the latest in hydroponics equipment, smoking utensils and organizers even advertise samples from some of the more than 40 collectives scheduled to attend.

Patients can find an array of exhibitors from local dispensaries and equipment manufacturers to educational services and on-site medical evaluations. It’s a place where, for those only involved in the scene on a medicinal level, can explore options for local treatment and options for ingesting as well as legal advice.

However, as much as it is an event for medical patients, it’s also a celebration of marijuana culture with booth babes, clothing and other weed-related artifacts. In addition to Cappadonna, 12th Planet will perform along with a lineup of DJs, including DJ Dome, DJ Hype, Hani Naser, Louis Conte and Craig Eastman.

Hempcon is also a big attraction for those involved—or looking to get into—the business of medicinal marijuana. There are numerous seminars, such as “How To Start a Delivery Business,” and the keynote speech of the event will be delivered by legal expert F. Freddy Sayegh on the convention’s final day. Sayegh is a Southern California lawyer specializing in medical marijuana issues. THCFinder.com is an official Sponsor of Hempcon so come by our Booth and grab some free goodies!

Expo to educate about Medical Marijuana in MIchigan

Category: Events | Posted on Sat, March, 23rd 2013 by THCFinder
DETROIT (WJBK) -
People who may want to learn more about using medical marijuana to treat their ailments can have all their questions answered this weekend under one roof.

The Third Annual Medical Marijuana Expo is underway in Detroit.  The Roostertail is hosting medical marijuana vendors from around the country.  There will also be classes and demonstrations.

Organizers say patients and caregivers from all walks of life will attend.

"It brings out individuals that don't really know about it," said Heidi Parike, founder and president of Michigan Compassion.  "Friday's great for the vendors to come out and talk to each other, and Saturday is for everyone, and I always say Sunday is like the church crowd because we get a lot of older people that come in to learn about cannabis as medicine."

We're told medical marijuana certification will also be offered.
