Gov. Kasich signs Ohio's medical marijuana bill into law

Category: Legalization | Posted on Thu, June, 9th 2016 by THCFinder

A bill authorizing physicians to prescribe marijuana derivatives to treat a host of health conditions was signed into law this afternoon by Ohio Gov. John Kasich.

The second-term Republican had expressed support for the concept, but his office had not said whether he would sign the hard-won legislation until he studied its details. He signed the bill within a couple of hours of it landing on his desk.

The bill passed the Republican-controlled General Assembly — by a 18-15 vote in the Senate and a 67-28 vote in the House — on May 25.

West Virginia Legislators Propose Bill To End Marijuana Prohibition

Category: Legalization | Posted on Tue, June, 7th 2016 by THCFinder

west virginia medical marijuanaGood news out of West Virginia today. See the legislative alert I received below:

The West Virginia Legislature failed to reform its marijuana policies in the 2015-2016 legislative session, primarily because House Speaker Tim Armstead continues to oppose even the most modest, incremental reforms. Fortunately, now that a special session has been called, five delegates have decided this is an opportunity to raise the issue of marijuana legalization. Del. Mike Pushkin (D-Charleston) and a bipartisan group of four co-sponsors have introduced HB 114, which would make marijuana legal on a limited basis in West Virginia.

The Charleston Gazette-Mail published an editorial praising these legislators’ efforts, calling legalization an “excellent idea.” The Gazette-Mail noted that the bill “has no chance” of passing in the special session, but it still presents an important opportunity to raise the issue with elected officials.

Please take a moment to contact your delegates and senators today and urge them to consider the benefits of ending marijuana prohibition.

Then, please share this message with your family and friends.

Sincerely,

Matt Simon
New England Political Director

Up to 12 States Could Vote on Marijuana This November -- Here They Are

Category: Legalization | Posted on Mon, June, 6th 2016 by THCFinder

Marijuana legalization has been growing like a weed for the past two decades, but 2016 could prove to be its most monumental year yet. Although marijuana has gained 24 state approvals for medicinal use, and four states have legalized its recreational use, we could see up to 12 separate approvals for the currently illicit drug in November.

This expansion is especially important because current President Barack Obama has suggested that the best way to get the attention of Congress is to continue legalizing the drug at the state level. Doing so would eventually force lawmakers to reconsider the federal government's current Schedule 1 stance on the drug.

In total, voters in three states are guaranteed to vote on marijuana this November. Of the remaining nine states, one is a seeming lock to get a marijuana initiative on the ballot, while the remaining eight are still in the process of collecting signatures.

MILegalize And The Hollow Place

Category: Legalization | Posted on Sun, June, 5th 2016 by THCFinder

michigan marijuana legalization milegalizeThis isn’t a typical facts-on-figures article about the MILegalize campaign to legalize the adult use of marijuana in Michigan. In fact, there won’t be any facts in this article. Only feelings.

Except, I don’t really know what I am feeling right now.

Part of me wants to say, FUCK YEAH! Less than 48 hours ago, our campaign turned in more than 350,000 signatures on 55,000 petition sheets contained within 61 boxes, collected over 11 months of campaigning. We raised just shy of $1.1 million and have a statewide volunteer base of more than a thousand registered participants.

Okay, so there were a few facts tossed in. Here’s another fact: I am on the Board of MILegalize, along with more than a dozen others, attorneys and significant activists from around the state. We did what people said we could not; we finished what people said was a dead campaign; we broke rules, made new rules and forced the Michigan Legislature and Board of State Canvassers to alter policy and draft new law to prevent others from doing what we have done.

All praiseworthy and remarkable accomplishments. So why do I feel hollow?

Ohio on the Verge of Legalizing Medical Marijuana

Category: Legalization | Posted on Thu, May, 26th 2016 by THCFinder

Ohio is on the verge of becoming the next state to legalize medical marijuana for patients suffering from serious conditions.

On Wednesday, after making a few minor tweaks to the language, the Senate put its seal of approval on a proposal designed to provide patients with access to marijuana for medicinal purposes. The changes to the Senate version were then given the green light by the House of Representatives, sending the bill to the office of Governor John Kasich for either a signature or veto.
