Category: News | Posted on Tue, February, 1st 2011 by THCFinder

TUCSON, AZ (KOLD) - Agents seized more than 3,500 pounds of marijuana with a street value of $2.8 million in three separate incidents.

In the first incident on Friday, United States Border Patrol agents near Ajo say they spotted footprints from a group who illegally entered the country.

They say as they were tracking the footprints, they saw the group flee the area.

Agents were able to catch up to two suspects.

In the area, they found 24 bundles of marijuana, weighing 1,157 pounds with an estimated value of $925,600.

Later on Friday, agents assigned to the Ajo Station's All Terrain Vehicle Unit found 34 bundles of abandoned marijuana, weighing 1,556 pounds with an estimated value of $1.2 million.

On Sunday, agents working in Patagonia discovered an abandoned truck with marijuana bundles in the cabin and bed, weighing 809 pounds with an estimated value of $647,000.

A check of records revealed the truck had been reported stolen.

"Each interdiction of illegal drugs puts additional pressure on drug trafficking organizations," stated Division Chief Manuel Padilla. "Our agents maintain their vigilance and strive to continue disrupting the smugglers' ability to operate and transport contraband within the Tucson Sector."

Agents say the public continues to be a valuable source of information regarding illegal activity.

Cannabis Abuse 'May Be A Factor Behind High Crime Rate'

Category: News | Posted on Mon, January, 31st 2011 by THCFinder

CANNABIS abuse could be one of the factors behind the high rate of crime in the Bahamas, according to a local psychiatrist. Dr Kirk Christie, of the Sandilands Rehabilitation Centre, said taking into account the disinhibiting effects of cannabis and the fact that its use is widespread, the drug could be fuelling deviant behaviour. In a meeting with Social Service Hotline councillors yesterday, Dr Christie stressed the dangers of substance abuse, and in particular cannabis abuse. He said the fact that cannabis is culturally and socially accepted, cheap and readily available in the Bahamas, encourages the false perception it is not a dangerous drug.

However, Dr Christie said despite the "general overvalued idea that there are no effects of cannabis use," like any other form of substance abuse, it is "a health nightmare." He said studies have shown that abuse of the drug can have very serious consequences. Physiological effects of cannabis use include: hypertension (high blood pressure), shortness of breath, decreased co-ordination and reaction times, ataxia, impaired memory and perception, sensory distortion such as hallucinations, paranoid disorders, mood alteration, and depersonalisation. In men, it can also cause a decrease in libido (sex drive), lower testosterone and sperm counts, and shrinking of the scrotum. One study, performed in the Sandilands Rehabilitation Centre among 120 patients in the substance abuse treatment programme, found the median age for the onset of cannabis disorders was 21, and usually ranged between 17 and 26.

Dr Christie added that a new study completed in Europe found marijuana use makes a person seven times more likely to lose touch with reality. The treatment programme for substance abuse normally lasts about two years and includes detoxification, rehabilitation, relapse prevention and maintenance. Dr Christie stressed the importance of education and relaying of correct information. "The aim of education is to provide students, teachers and families with accurate information about drug abuse and addiction and the association with high-risk sexual behaviour," said Dr Christie. "Those under the influence take more irresponsible risks." While not everyone who uses drugs becomes addicted, for many what starts as casual use leads to drug addiction, he added.

Mailed marijuana brings charge

Category: News | Posted on Mon, January, 31st 2011 by THCFinder

A man accused of receiving nearly a pound of marijuana through the mail was charged Monday in District Court.

John Lewis Groom, 47, appeared for arraignment by video from the county jail and pleaded not guilty to felony drug possession with intent to distribute.

Judge G. Todd Baugh agreed to release Groom without bond after a public defender said Groom lives in California and the charge stems from an investigation more than two years ago.

Groom has no prior felony convictions and turned himself in when he learned of the warrant for his arrest, the defense attorney said.

According to court records, Groom and Erin Gallagher lived at a residence on Alderson Avenue in October 2008. An investigation by a federal and local drug task force revealed that the pair had  received several packages through the mail containing large amounts of marijuana, authorities said.

About 400 grams of marijuana and $1,538 cash were found during a search of the residence, court records state.

Gallagher, 24, was charged in August and has since pleaded guilty to a reduced charge of felony drug possession. She is scheduled to be sentenced Feb. 8. A plea agreement calls for her to receive a three-year deferred sentence.

In a similar but unrelated case, a 50-year-old Billings woman, Mildred Strike, is scheduled to go trial in late February on an allegation that she received a package through Federal Express mail containing seven pounds of marijuana. Strike remains free on a $5,000 bond.
