Mounties let honest pot-smoking driver go

A Yarmouth driver who smoked a joint while an RCMP officer chatted with drivers a few cars ahead of him at a roadside checkpoint last week fessed up when asked if he had smoked any dope recently.
Yup, he said. Like, 30 seconds ago.
But was the 20-something man’s seatbelt securely fastened? Absolutely.
Was he co-operative? Yes.
And was the odour of that freshly smoked joint still wafting through the air as the cops waved him up? Yeah, but he seemed fine, so after he put his small stash of dope into the outstretched hand of a Mountie, he was on his way.
But smoking a joint while waiting in line at an RCMP checkpoint may not be the smartest thing to do, said Cpl. Andy Hamilton of the RCMP’s western traffic services.
"I don’t know the exact distance, but it wasn’t very far (back in the line)," Hamilton said.
"I can’t get into this guy’s mind, but he felt comfortable enough to light a joint within eyesight of the police, probably figuring he’d finish it off before he gets there and no one will be the wiser."
When he got to the front of the line, the joint was gone but the Mounties noticed other evidence.
The mellow man was detained for a while but eventually sent on his way.

Cannabis grow trailer stolen from trade show!

DENVER (Reuters) -A pot-growing trailer known as the "GrowBot" was stolen from a medical marijuana trade show in Denver over the weekend, and the owner on Tuesday offered a $5,000 reward for its return.
Greg Childre, who builds custom trailers for a variety of crops at his Georgia manufacturing plan, said the trailer was stolen from the High Times Medical Cannabis Cup in Denver late Sunday night.
The 28-foot long "GrowBot" trailer was driven out of the trade show parking lot in full view of security guards, Childre said.
Parking lot surveillance cameras captured the crime, but did not detect the license plates of the Dodge truck that hitched up the trailer and drove off, he said.
The trailer had no cannabis but had over $50,000 worth of equipment inside.
A pretty ballsy move for the person stealing this beast.

A 20-year-old man who has been arrested for possession of marijuana and stealing a Krispy Kreme doughnut truck said he did it because he was 'tired and wanted to have a sleep'.
Randall Travis Roberts, from Davenport, Iowa, was arrested on Thursday and charged with grand theft auto and possession of less than 20 grams of marijuana.
He claims the Class B drug did not belong to him.
Police said two vehicles bumped into each other and the drivers thought the mirrors might have been damaged, so they stopped in the 400 block of West Silver Springs Boulevard and called police.
At the scene, Roberts officer Leonard Griggs he had stolen the 2011 GMC box truck owned by Gulf Florida Doughnut Distributing in Tampa from a Walmart parking lot in Haines City.
Roberts told the officers he had gotten tired of walking and that his feet hurt.
He said he saw the truck, with the keys inside, parked behind the Walmart and took it 'because he needed somewhere to sleep'.
Inside the truck was 338 boxes of Krispy Kreme doughnuts as well as a plastic bag of marijuana on the floor near the driver's seat.

City of Boulder denies access to medical marijuana criminal background checks

BOULDER, Colo. — The city of Boulder is refusing to release copies of criminal background checks that it ran on people applying for medical marijuana business licenses — including five businesses that the city briefly shut down after principal investors or general managers were flagged by the checks.
The Camera recently requested copies of application records that would shed light on why the city rejected business licenses for High Grade Alternatives, 8th Street Care Center, Southwest Alternative Care, Timberline Herbal Clinic, Mountain Medicine Group and Fresh Baked Dispensary.
The six companies were shut down by the city earlier this month. One business had a zoning issue, while the other five had problems with background checks. The city announced last week that the five companies with background issues could stay open pending appeals.
City ordinance says that anyone with at least a 10 percent stake in a marijuana business must submit to a background check. Anyone convicted of a felony in the last five years cannot operate a medical marijuana business. The city application asks for information about felony convictions in the last 10 years, DUI convictions and any misdemeanors related to abuse of alcohol or illegal drugs.
In an email to the Camera on Thursday, city officials wrote that the "criminal background checks will not be provided for review."
They wrote that the city is not the "custodian" of the checks it performed on applicants, that the checks are "not public records of the city" and that they're considered criminal justice records and therefore aren't subject to the Colorado Open Records Act.

Alligator watches over marijuana in Southern California

Riverside County, California - Narcotic agents entered a home on Monday to find nearly 2300 marijuana plants and a healthy 50 pound American alligator guarding the stash. The four-foot long gator was living in a black cement mixer filled with water seemingly set up to be protecting the 1.5 million dollar illegal marijuana growing operation. Agents dubbed Wally the friendly alligator the "watchgator."

Joel Almquist, who runs Forever Wild Exotic Animal Sanctuary in Phelan transferred the "very, very mellow" reptile to his new home. Alligators are illegal to own privately in California, but have become popular pets according to Almquist.

One of the draws is because they are illegal. That gives them spice to have them. They're cheap and they're fairly easy to get."

Baby alligators are commonly purchased online for $50, and the reptiles are shipped to their destination. Once the animals get too big, however they are released out into the wild. In the last four years, Almquist has rescued 70 alligators.

Arrested was John Nathan Donna, 29, and he was charged with suspicion of the possession of concentrated cannabis cultivation of marijuana for sale. Agents have alleged Donna's house was a front for an unlicensed medical marijuana dispensary. He was released on $100,000 bail.

Men sell marijuana out of ice cream truck, say police

HOUMA, La. – Two men were arrested for allegedly selling marijuana from an ice cream truck in a Houma neighborhood, according to Lafourche Parish Sheriff’s Office spokeswoman Sgt. Lesley Hill.

Sunday, police were called to Central Lafourche Drive after someone told officers that drugs were being sold from an ice cream truck, said Hill.

The truck was stopped a few blocks away on New Haven Street by deputies, and the driver, Johnathan Trahan, 20, of Houma, was questioned by police.

“As officers conducted a pat down of Trahan for officer safety, they located three plastic bags containing approximately 9 grams of suspected marijuana and a glass pipe in his pockets,” said Hill.

After searching and finding drugs on Trahan, a K-9 dog was brought to the scene by police to search the truck.  The dog alerted officers that drugs were inside the truck, but none were found by police during the search, according to Hill.

However, when officers patted down the other man who was in the truck, Hunter Pitre, 19, of Houma, a small bag of what is believed to be marijuana was found in his sock, according to Hill.

Pitre was cited with misdemeanor possession of marijuana, and Trahan was charged with possession of marijuana with the intent to distribute and possession of drug paraphernalia, according to Hill.

Trahan remains in the Lafourche Parish Detention Center.
